The person behind this

About David

For fifteen years I had severe OCD. At its worst: six-plus hours a day lost to compulsions, the highest dose of medication they could give me, and the verdict almost everyone with OCD eventually hears — this is something you manage for life.

I believed it, because everything I tried seemed to prove it. Therapy, ERP, medication — each took the edge off, hit its ceiling, and the OCD kept running underneath. The harder I fought, the more it dug in.

What changed it wasn't fighting harder. It was finally understanding what the compulsions were actually doing — and going to the root of that instead of managing its surface. The whole of it turned on a single move, made over and over:

Staying with what I had spent fifteen years leaving.

That's the work that took me from six hours a day to completely recovered. Not coping better. Recovered.

The book

The years since have gone into writing that path down precisely enough for someone else to walk it. The result is OCD: Conditions for Allowing, now in its fourth edition: what OCD actually is, how it forms, and the conditions under which it lets go. Everything on this site starts there.

The research

The framework didn't stop at OCD — and I didn't want to be the only person holding its claims. So I founded The Laingian Institute: a research body advancing a root-cause, mechanism-level model of mental distress — building the condition-by-condition map, the evidence behind it, and the network of practitioners who test it.

The connective is simple. Just as OCD's two constellations are built from four meanings given to perception, the Institute maps what that same unit — a perception given a meaning the system couldn't metabolise — forms beneath the other diagnoses. OCD is where the map is certain — its constellations of conflicts are fully worked out; the rest is the research programme, condition by condition, as the evidence earns it.

Its starting point is blunt: the diagnostic manual describes; it does not explain. And its position on the treatments you've probably tried is fairer than most critiques — incomplete, not incorrect: they work the surface without resolving what generates it. The Institute's claim — one mechanism beneath every diagnosis, one event across every recovery — is larger than anything this site asserts, which is exactly why it lives there and not here: made in the open, cited, falsifiable, with a second book in progress. If you want the science side of what you've read on this page, that's the door.

The practice

Alongside the writing I work with a small number of people directly, one to one. I keep that work small on purpose — it's where the framework's precision comes from, and where its proof accumulates. If working together is ever right for you, you'll find the door the way everyone does — and either way, it starts the same place everything here does: with the book.

A line I want in plain sight

I'm not a therapist or a clinician, and this isn't medical treatment. I'm someone who recovered, who has spent years making the path walkable, and who works in the open — real testimonials, cited research, claims I'm willing to have tested. If you're in crisis, please reach for crisis support first. This work is for when you have ground under you.
